what is community acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine: a healing modality that has witnessed an amazing growth in the West in the last half century.  It is a gentle yet powerful therapy that utilizes small needles that are inserted at core points along the energy networks of the body.  It usually requires repeated treatments to be effective.   Frequently however, the cost of individual sessions can be prohibitive.  Community acupuncture is a means of making that experience accessible, affordable and inviting within a healing space.

At Kula Annex, patients receive acupuncture in groups, resting in the quiet, meditative space of the studio while their needles are in place.  Many enjoy the community setting, as it enables them to come with a friend or family member.  This setting moreover, can have a powerful and positive impact on the results of the treatment.

what are the benefits of acupuncture?
Acupuncture treats blockages in the flow of energy (Qi – pronounced chee) in the body.  By tapping into a complex system of energy centres and points, acupuncture helps release blockages in the flow of energy, enabling our natural healing processes to function effectively.

Acupuncture’s positive effects include profound and lasting healing for:
anxiety & stress
allergies
coughs and colds
depression
digestive issues (constipation, bloating, diarrhea, gas, heartburn)
headaches or migraines
high blood pressure
insomnia
lower back pain
menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats)
menstrual problems (PMS painful / heavy periods, absence of periods)
morning sickness
muscle or joint pain
side-effects of medications (e.g. chemotherapy)
sinus congestion

what to expect?  what to wear?
Wear comfortable clothing, that can be rolled up to the elbows and knees.  Your yoga clothing is perfect. Kula will provide props, blankets and music to create a relaxing, healing environment while you sit or lie with your needles.

avoid:
perfumes or aftershaves
being hungry or full before your treatment.
Caffeine and other stimulants before your acupuncture

prior to your first visit:
Please arrive early to fill out the waiver form, even if you are a regular student at Kula. You’ll also have a short conversation with Brenna, who will look at your tongue, feel your pulse, and suggest a treatment plan.  Appointments are 10 minutes in length, but you will have the full hour to relax in the studio until your needles are removed.

during your visit:
Having acupuncture could be described as a period of deep stillness in which nothing seems to be happening, but all sorts of things get done.  It can be compared to some of those hard to hold yoga postures, or even ones like Savasana!

Most acupuncture treatments last for 45-60 minutes. During this time, we will ask a few questions, put the needles in, and come back to take them out when you are ready. If you need to leave by a certain time, please tell us.

after your visit:
You are likely to feel more relaxed. You may feel sleepy, or you may have more energy than when you came in. Either way, it is best not to stimulate the body (e.g. with caffeine, alcohol, or vigorous activity) after acupuncture.
