Learning is living
I am always amazed by the people/places/experiences that reveal themselves as teachers. In fact, by not confining where I am meant to learn something, I experience life as a blessing full of opportunities to grow and evolve as a person. If I saw myself as only a teacher, a yogi, a girl, a friend, a daughter, a sister, a lover or a novice skateboarder I would rob myself of the gifts of being a forever student. I take this sense of studentship quite seriously (though always with a hint of a smile) and I am thankful to John Friend for providing an invaluable framework for living as a student. If you are learning to live by living I hope that the following helps you on your beautiful journey of discovery and transformation.
5 Elements of Studentship inspired by the Universal Principles of Alignment
Open : Be completely open like the sky. Take in the wisdom that surrounds you and that is within you fully. Be receptive and totally humble. When we think we know something we limit our ability to deepen our understanding, to challenge our beliefs and to discover more. Open up to everything that you don’t know.
Commit : Dedicate yourself with determination and steadfastness. Show up. Be on time. Practice regularly. Life is about participating. Questions will not get answered if they are never asked. Life is worth living even when it is challenging, sad, frustrating and scary. In my experience, it is in those moments of darkness and difficulty that there exists a wealth of potential to learn and find more light than you ever believed possible.
Flow : Be dynamic. Trust that sometimes you are being guided in the right direction even if it doesn’t feel like the right way. Be patient if your questions aren’t being answered. Maybe they will be answered when you ready to live the answer. Live at the pace that the teachers in your life are asking you to flow at. Sometimes that means slowing down and sometimes that means speeding up.
Light your fire : Burn as brightly as the stars. Live and learn with enormous passion, so much so that you inspire and lift up the world around you. Take initiative. Take responsibility for your actions. Contribute. Make a difference. You serve no one by hiding your gifts.
Grow : Expand beyond your boundaries. Transform. Develop your skills. Cultivate your creativity. Move into places that you don’t want move into. Read stuff you don’t want to read. Listen more. Learn more. Open your mind. Your potential is limitless.
